Electricity

Did you know that today’s electrical wiring and fittings have a far longer lifespan than before, and are safer to use? However, it is still important to be extra careful around electricity. Following these simple precautions will keep everyone safe:

System overload

The first rule around electricity is never to overload the system. The use of too many two-way adaptors, for instance, can cause serious overload – modern power strips or extra sockets are safer. It is also important to replace extension leads, plugs and bulbs as they age.

Fuses

Please ensure that your electrical appliances are fitted with the correctly rated fuses and keep stocks handy. An incorrect fuse can damage the appliance and can also be dangerous to you.

Hidden wiring

Make sure you avoid putting nails or screws into hidden wiring. When hanging pictures or fixing shelves, the danger areas are usually above and below light sockets.

Electricity consumer unit

It is important that you know where your electricity consumer unit is located (you will find details of this on your Warranty Provider Guide). This unit employs circuit breakers rather than traditional fuses. It is worth taking time to ensure that you are familiar with the unit. The trip switches will have been labelled so you can reset them when necessary (possibly in the dark so have a torch handy). If the system continues to trip, please use a qualified electrician to source the cause.

Smoke detector

Your smoke detector operates via mains electricity but is also fitted with batteries for operation during power failures. It is worthwhile checking the batteries every 3 months.

Appliances

Should you have doubts over any appliance, disconnect it immediately and have it checked.

Alterations

If you plan to make alterations to your electrical system, please consult an electrical contractor. It is essential to switch off electricity at the mains and unplug all appliances if repairs are being carried out.
